Boston Light - Little Brewster Island

This morning I had the pleasure of heading out to Little Brewster Island to cover the ribbon cutting ceremony of Boston Light for Boston Harbor Island Alliance. Boston light is the oldest lighthouse in the country, and the only one still manned by the US Coastguard.

In addition to covering the ceremonies, I got to tour the lighthouse and explore the island, shooting potential marketing images for the Island Alliance. More images to follow soon - however it was too cool of a morning to not share some of this stuff today.

Even on a dreary day with occasional drizzle, it was a really cool excursion! If you're interested in checking out the lighthouse and surrounding islands for yourself, the Boston Light Tour starts running on Saturday.

And yes, it is 'a three hour tour'.

Rear Admiral Daniel A. Neptun from the US Coast Guard and Bruce Jacobson, Superintendent with the National Park Service cut the ribbon on the new floating dock to the lighthouse. (Yes, the Admiral's last name is Neptun - how cool is that?)

The Admiral and Bruce again, this time joined by Deb Wade, the great-great-great-great-great-great granddaughter of George Worthylake (the first lighthouse keeper in the country - before it was even the United States)

Photos of Zildjian in Tom Tom Magazine

Back in April I headed down to Zildjian for a shot for Brooklyn-based Tom Tom magazine. It's a relatively new (this is the third issue), rather spiffy looking magazine about female drummers. The issue just came out, so to generate some interest I wanted to post a peek at the story and some of my favorite photos from the shoot.

Have Nots - Allston, MA

Shot over the weekend with Have Nots for an upcoming issue of Performer Magazine!

In addition to getting to utilize the gorgeous weather, I was really psyched to play around with speedlites off camera.

I finally got a hold of Microsync Digital's transmitter/receiver setup and haven't really used it for non-studio work yet. Instead of dragging my whole strobe-kit around and relying on outlets, I was able to just throw a speedlite up on a light stand, set it accordingly and shoot away. It was an insanely-simple setup and let me spend time staging and making photos rather than unpacking and packing the strobes. Worked flawlessly, too!

It was a really fun shoot, and we came away with some great images.
Here's a sneak peak!

If you haven't heard them before and you're into really energetic punk/ska you should definitely check them out.
They're actually playing the Middle East on May 24th with Brunt of It (RI) and Sonic Boom Six (UK) - a really killer lineup. Be on the lookout for the whole story in June's Performer.

Ducali

Here are some images from Ducali in the North End, which I shot for the issue of Improper Bostonian that hit streets today. Such a bright and beautiful afternoon when I went - it was actually sunny enough that I was able to shoot using only the available light.

I don't know if it was the recent bout of rainy weather playing tricks on me or not, but it seems like it's been a while since I last just picked up my camera and shot without any artificial lighting augmenting the photo. It was kind of liberating to be out on a gorgeous day just shooting away. Having amazing food to shoot helped as well...

It was one of those shoots that reaffirmed my opinion that food doesn't always need to be crazy, hyper-styled to look good.
Shooting a dish right out of the kitchen in flattering natural light can go a long way.

Definitely a really chill place if you're ever in Boston and want to try some great Italian food without having to dodge all the pastry-totin' tourists on Salem or Hanover St... check it out!

Bergamot

Bergamot is a new Restaurant that just opened up in Somerville. When I headed out into a dreary, drizzly evening, I was not expecting the images I took to end up so bright and cheery! However, the interior, the staff, and - of course - the food all come together to create a venture with a great, vibrant character to it.

Rain Rain Go Away

It seemed really silly when we were shooting this style page, as it was one of the hottest and sunniest days we've had in months.
Now that the current issue of Improper is out, accompanied by two straight days of rain, it doesn't seem quite so silly.

Hope you're keeping dry out there!

Vagabond Jewelry Shoot

Over the winter I came across some really really cool jewelry by a fellow Mass Art grad, Kest Schwartzman. Under the moniker Vagabond Jewelry she produces some pretty unbelievable stuff. Her work is very sculptural and has a lot of character, and as soon as I saw it I knew I wanted to shoot with her.

So, a couple of weeks ago we organized a shoot to photograph some promo stuff for Vagabond at the Dance Complex studios in Central Square. (For any local photographers who don't have a permanent shoot space of their own, I'd definitely recommend this place. The dance studios offer a flat hourly rental in any of their spaces, which is pretty cheap compared to others in the area that I've come across. The only catch - no shoes. Gotta keep the dance floor clean! So if you're cool shooting in socks, I'd go for it.)

Gina Rullo did a seriously killer job on makeup and hair - bright colors and styles that complemented the pieces super well.
And she was a trooper, knocking out a bunch of unique styles in the limited time we had, all despite feeling under the weather.

Amanda, Ondi and Theresa were all super easy to shoot with, and definitely worked the character of each piece to make some distinct photographs.

I'm still working my way through everything we shot that afternoon, but for now here's a few highlights!
